Tips / Troubleshooting

While sewer problems should be left to the professionals, it's important to know what can cause sewer stoppage:

Flushing Items Other than Toilet Paper

Toilet paper is the only item that should be flushed down your toilet. You should not be flushing feminine products, wipes, fats, oils, grease, and paper towels. Your sewer system is not able to break down these items. While it might not be an immediate problem, as you flush these items over time, they can build up in your sewer system and cause a blockage.

Tree Root Intrusion

Most of your sewer system is housed underground. As tree roots grow, they can infiltrate your sewer line and cause an opening. If this happens, the tree roots will need to be removed and the pipes will need to be replaced.

Improper Drainage

If you live in an older house, your sewer system is probably made of cast iron or another metal material. These materials can end up becoming corroded, causing materials to get lodged and preventing proper drainage.

Damage to Pipes

Pipes can break or burst, causing a major problem for your sewer system. Breaks or bursts can be caused by increased pressure, shifts in soil, age, and more.

Sagging or Bellying Sewer Lines

Over time, your sewer lines can sag due to sinking soil or other ground conditions. As the pipes sag, items can begin to build up within the sag and cause a blockage. Blockages can cause drain clogs, multiple drain clogs at the same time, a flooding shower, or flooding in your lawn.
